Monovision LASIK is a technique that corrects both your distance vision and near vision and works well for people with presbyopia. Both LASIK and PRK procedures can be used as a method to create monovision LASIK.
Since the start of his career, Dr. Mozayeni has successfully recommended LASIK as a method to achieve monovision. While creating monovision with LASIK has been an option since 1994, it has been especially successful since the introduction of the WaveLight Allegretto Eye-Q Laser in 2004 and now the WaveLight EX500 laser installed in 2014.
What is Presbyopia?
Simply put, presbyopia is the loss of your ability to focus up close, usually caused by aging and becomes apparent typically in your mid-forties. This causes farsightedness, which you may have noticed from not being able to easily read books or text messages. While this is completely normal to happen as you age, you may be looking for options to correct it. Luckily, monovision LASIK is a great option for you.
What is Monovision LASIK?
Monovision LASIK is when the dominant eye is corrected to see well at long distances and the non-dominate eye is corrected to see close up. You may be thinking you will have to close one eye to see far and the other to see near, but this is not the case! Typically, the brain and the eyes sync up, providing our patients with great usable vision at all distance without being dependent on glasses, contacts or even readers.
Does Monovision LASIK Actually Work?
Yes! Dr. Mozayani always reviews monovision LASIK with all his patients over the age of 40. It is important for every patient to understand both the short-term and long-term ramifications of laser eye surgery. With monovision, typically our brain and eyes will sync up and can adapt to these changes. If you have not experienced monovision with contact lenses, it is required to “test drive” this vision solution utilizing contact lenses for 3-14 days. By day 14 you will be able to decide as to whether this is the right vision solution for you. We provide this contact lens “test drive” service under the direction of Dr. Mills or Dr. Raykovicz, our contact lens experts. Please do not be concerned if you have never worn contacts before. Our team of experts is happy to assist you.
Please note that the contact lens fit, samples and subsequent follow up is not included in our complimentary LASIK consultation. We will be happy to review these nominal charges (applicable to your surgery) with you over the phone. Schedule your complimentary consultation to discuss if monovision is right for you!
