In today’s busy world, time is a valuable commodity. If you have just scheduled your LASIK consultation, you may be wondering why it takes two hours. We get it, two hours is a pretty big time commitment for a LASIK consultation. However, you may be surprised to learn that determining if you are an ideal LASIK candidate is not just based on your prescriptions. There are many factors that determine if you are an ideal candidate.

LASIK Consultation: Part I

Providence Eye & Laser Specialists is a “paperless” office so you will complete your online patient registration in the comfort of your own home. Hence, when you arrive for your LASIK consultation, you will not have to spend time filling out any old-fashioned paperwork, but instead you will be seen promptly.

To begin your LASIK consultation, you will be greeted and escorted into our testing area by one of our friendly ophthalmic technicians, who will complete the initial testing on your eyes. This testing includes the following:

  • Taking images of your cornea with our Pentacam
  • Measuring your vision
  • Checking for dry eye
  • Several other tests

Don’t worry, none of the tests we perform will blow air in your eye, poke anything in your eye, or hurt you in any way. When the ophthalmic technicians have completed their testing, they will instill dilating drops in your eyes. This portion of the LASIK consultation takes about 60 minutes.

LASIK Consultation: Part 2

Dilating drops take about 20-30 minutes to take effect. We will take advantage of this time to continue to educate you via our patient education video. During the video you will leave about the LASIK procedure, our laser vision correction team, including your surgeon and our practice.

LASIK Consultation: Part 3

Once your eyes have dilated you will be ready to meet with your specific surgeon either Dr. Nunnery or Dr. Mozayeni. He will look at your vision again now that your eyes are dilated, assess the overall health of your eyes and analyze your corneas by looking at the corneal mapping created by the Pentcam. During this time, you will have the opportunity to ask him any questions. We will not rush you and we encourage you to take as much time with him as you need. Depending on your situation and how many questions you have, you will be with your doctor anywhere from 15-30 minutes.

LASIK Consultation: Part 4

After your time with surgeon, it will be time to wrap up your LASIK consultation. For about 20 minutes, you will meet with one of our certified ophthalmic technicians who will explain the surgery price, pre and post operatively, answer any additional questions and review our pricing and payment options. At this time, you will have the opportunity to schedule you LASIK surgery. However, you will not be pressured to do so or be asked for a deposit or credit check. Our goal is to educate you and answer all your questions so that you can feel confident about your decision. Ultimately your consultation is good for a full year.

At Providence Eye & Laser Specialist we respect you as an individual, your time and your decision on whether or not you want to have LASIK surgery. It is our goal to provide you with a comprehensive LASIK consultation, which will enable you to determine if LASIK is the right decision for you.
