In today’s busy world, time is a valuable commodity. If you just scheduled your LASIK consultation, you may be wondering why it takes two hours. We get it, two hours is a pretty big time commitment for a LASIK consultation. However, you may be surprised to learn that determining if you are an ideal LASIK candidate is not just based on your prescriptions. The factors that determine how long a LASIK consultation takes are based on if you are an ideal candidate or not.

LASIK Consultation: Part I

Providence Eye & Laser Specialists is a “paperless” office so you will complete your patient registration online in the comfort of your own home. Rather than filling out old-fashioned paperwork when you arrive, you will be seen promptly, making your LASIK consultation take less time.

To begin your LASIK consultation, you will be greeted and escorted into our testing area by one of our friendly ophthalmic technicians who will complete the initial testing on your eyes. This testing includes the following:

  • Taking images of your cornea with our Pentacam
  • Measuring your vision
  • Checking for dry eye
  • Several other tests

Don’t worry, none of the tests we perform will blow air in your eye, poke anything in your eye or hurt you in any way. When the ophthalmic technicians have completed their testing, they will instill dilating drops in your eyes. This portion of the LASIK consultation detailed above takes about 60 minutes.

LASIK Consultation: Part 2

Dilating drops take about 20-30 minutes to take effect. We will take advantage of this time to continue to educate you with our patient education video. During the video, you will learn about your LASIK procedure, our state-of-the-art technology, as well as the surgeons and laser vision correction team at Providence Eye.

LASIK Consultation: Part 3

Once your eyes have dilated you will be ready to meet with your LASIK surgeon, either Dr. Nunnery or Dr. Mozayeni. Your surgeon will check your vision again now that your eyes are dilated to assess the overall health of your eyes and analyze your corneas by looking at the corneal mapping created by the Pentcam. During this time, you will have the opportunity to ask your LASIK surgeon questions and we encourage you to take as much time as needed. Depending on your situation and how many questions you ask, this section of your LASIK Consultation takes anywhere from 15-30 minutes.

LASIK Consultation: Part 4

After meeting with the surgeon, it will be time to wrap up your LASIK consultation. For about 20 minutes, you will meet with one of our certified ophthalmic technicians who will explain LASIK surgery pre and post-operative care and instructions, pricing and payment options and answer any remaining questions you may have. You will also have the opportunity to schedule your LASIK surgery. However, you will not be pressured to do so or be asked for a deposit or credit check. Our goal is to educate you and answer all your questions so that you can feel confident about your decision. Your LASIK consultation is good for a full year so there is no pressure to decide on the spot.

At Providence Eye & Laser Specialist, it is our obligation to provide you with the most comprehensive LASIK consultation to determine if you are an ideal candidate and so you can feel confident about your decision to have LASIK eye surgery.
