In today’s busy world, time is a valuable commodity. If you’ve recently scheduled your LASIK consultation, you may be wondering: How long does a LASIK consultation take? The answer should be about two hours. We get it, two hours is a pretty big time commitment for a LASIK consultation. However, you may be surprised to discover that determining if you are an ideal LASIK candidate is not solely based on your prescription. There are dozens of factors that need to be taken into consideration to determine the duration of your LASIK consultation.

LASIK Consultation: Part I

At Providence Eye & Laser Specialists, we operate as a “paperless” office so you will complete your patient registration online in the comfort of your own home. By eliminating the need to fill out old-fashioned paperwork when you arrive, you will instead be seen promptly, making your LASIK consultation take less time.

To begin your LASIK consultation, one of our friendly ophthalmic technicians will greet you and escort you into our testing area where they will complete the initial diagnostic testing on your eyes. This testing includes the following:

  • Taking images of your cornea with our Pentacam
  • Measuring your vision
  • Checking for dry eye
  • Several other tests

Don’t worry, none of the tests we perform involve blowing air in your eye, poking your eye or hurting you in any way. When the ophthalmic technician has completed their testing, they will instill dilating drops in your eyes. This portion of the LASIK consultation detailed above takes about 60 minutes.

LASIK Consultation: Part 2

Dilating drops take about 20-30 minutes to take effect. We will take advantage of this time by continuing to educate you with our patient education video. During the video, you will learn about the LASIK procedure, our state-of-the-art technology, the surgeons and laser vision correction team at Providence Eye & Laser Specialists and get answers to frequently asked questions.

LASIK Consultation: Part 3

Once your eyes are dilated, you’ll be ready to meet with your LASIK surgeon, either Dr. Nunnery or Dr. Mozayeni. Your surgeon will check your vision again, now that your eyes are dilated, to assess the overall health of your eyes and analyze your corneas using the corneal mapping created by thePentcam. During this time, you will have the opportunity to ask your LASIK surgeon questions and we encourage you to take as much time as needed. How long your LASIK consultation takes depends on your situation and how many questions you ask. Normally, this part of the LASIK Consultation takes anywhere from 10-20 minutes.

LASIK Consultation: Part 4

After meeting with your surgeon, it will be about time to wrap up your LASIK consultation. During the last 15 - 20 minutes, your ophthalmic technician will explain everything regarding your LASIK surgery, including pre and post-operative care instructions, pricing and payment and financing options, as well as answer any remaining questions you may have. You will even have the opportunity to schedule your LASIK surgery. However, you will not be pressured to do so and you will never be asked for a deposit or credit check. Our primary goal is to educate you and answer all your questions so that you can feel confident about your decision. Please note that your LASIK consultation is good for a full year so there is no pressure to decide on the spot.

At Providence Eye & Laser Specialists, it is our commitment to provide you with the most comprehensive LASIK consultation to determine if you are an ideal candidate so that you can feel confident about your decision to have LASIK eye surgery.
