At the beginning of 2022, Puja Patel began assisting her father in finding a cataract surgeon to make her father feel comfortable and help him regain clear vision. Q: Puja, we are so excited to hear about your father’s successful cataract surgery with Dr. Nunnery and how his experience led to your successful all-laser LASIK surgery, also with Dr. Nunnery. But before we get to that, we would like to get to know you a little bit more. Can you tell us about yourself?
A: Absolutely, I was born and raised here in Charlotte, NC, making me a real Charlottean! I’m fortunate to have both my parents as well as an older brother. I work for a Fortune 100 company in their Cybersecurity department as a senior information security engineer.
Q: Wow, I imagine that can be an exciting yet stressful job at times. What do you enjoy doing in your free time to relax and “unplug”?
A: To relieve stress I like to work out, specifically lift weights, and cook. When I cook, I love being adventurous and trying new recipes. But when I just want to relax, you can find me on the couch catching up on new movies and tv shows.
Q: What made you decide to get all-laser LASIK?
A: I really didn’t like wearing glasses or contacts. I was wearing daily contacts to reduce dryness but my eyes still felt dry and daily contacts were very expensive. If I wore glasses in lieu of contacts, they always felt uncomfortable and usually gave me a headache. No matter what I did to correct my vision, I was uncomfortable, with either dry eyes or a headache. I really wanted to improve my quality of life. Correcting my vision felt like a step in the right direction.
Q: How did you decide that Dr. Nunnery was the right surgeon for you?
A: I have wanted to get vision correction surgery since I received my prescription for glasses as a teen, but what really motivated me to act was that I was traveling a lot. I hated having to pack glasses or make sure I had extra contacts every time I traveled. There was a time when I had neither my glasses nor contacts on a trip and this was problematic. I met Dr. Nunnery while I was assisting my dad with his need for cataract surgery. During appointments, consultations, and check-ups, I personally witnessed Dr. Nunnery taking his time to educate my dad to ensure that he understood all aspects of the surgery and how he may feel throughout the process. Dr. Nunnery showed a tremendous amount of empathy, care, and patience—and my dad is not the easiest patient. After seeing this very educational and personal experience, I knew that I wanted that same experience with Dr. Nunnery for my all-laser LASIK surgery. And that's exactly what I experienced!
Q: What aspect of your life has changed most dramatically since your all-laser LASIK with Dr. Nunnery?
A: Traveling is a breeze! I have way less stuff to pack and don’t worry about running out of contacts or forgetting glasses. But iit’s also wonderful every morning. Waking up in the morning and not having to put on glasses or contacts is truly life-changing.
Q: Would you recommend that others consider LASIK with Dr. Nunnery at Providence Eye? And, why?
A: I 100% recommend doing all-laser LASIK with Dr. Nunnery! Dr. Nunnery answers all questions confidently, which is a testament to his expertise as a cornea specialist.
He walked me through each step of the all-laser LASIK surgery. He talks to you during the procedure telling you what you may feel, making you way less nervous. Dr. Nunnery has a calm and relaxing tone and energy throughout the whole process that made me feel comfortable.
Q: Puja, here is our last question: Beach or mountains?
A: Definitely beach! And now I can enjoy the ocean without worrying about losing contacts in the water!
