What is Microneedling?

Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure to revitalize your appearance – firming, tightening, smoothing and sculpting your face and skin.
The process involves using a small hand held device that has tiny needles. These needles are inserted into the tissue at a specific depth (with minimal discomfort) to deliver radiofrequency energy to your tissue. This creates controlled microtrauma that stimulates your skin to rejuvenate.

Dr. Valerie H. Chen, an ophthalmic plastic surgeon, is pleased to offer this non-invasive treatment to her patients for common trouble areas on the face such as crows feet, smile lines, and other fine lines due to aging.

Two Methods of Microneedling: Scarlet and Agnes

Scarlet and Agnes are two methods of RF microneedling technology that address different aesthetic issues of the face: skin appearance and fat.

  • Scarlet: Tiny needles are placed into the skin to deliver radiofrequency energy to stimulate the body’s fibroblasts to create new collagen and elastin (we lose this with age and gravity takes over!). This helps to tighten and lift the skin, soften lines/wrinkles and improve skin texture (softer, smaller pores).
  • Agnes: When a single needle is placed repeatedly in specific areas of fat on the face, the fat cells are melted and destroyed. This can be a nonsurgical alternative to eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) or a neck lift

Dr. Chen applies a numbing gel to the treatment area making this treatment virtually painless. The length of the treatment depends treatment area and the desired results. Most Scarlet SRF and Agnes RF treatments take between 30 and 60 minutes.
