What should I expect during my complimentary LASIK consultation?

You will begin your LASIK consultation by entering our pristine, calm, and welcoming reception area where you will be greeted by our friendly professional team. We do not overbook our schedule, so please arrive on time.

Although each patient’s visit is specifically tailored to his or her needs, there are a few details you should be aware of to be prepared:

  • This will be the most thorough eye exam you have ever had!
  • Plan to be in our office for 2.5 hours.
  • Your eyes will be dilated, so expect some light sensitivity and a little trouble reading; you should be fine to drive on this day.
  • Bring your glasses and your contact boxes.
  • We ask that you complete the online registration process in our portal myPatientVisit prior to arriving in our office. This will allow us to see you in a timely fashion.
  • Prepare a list of questions. Our entire team will answer be pleased to answer all of your questions.

Diagnostic Testing Area

To begin your LASIK consultation, one of our certified ophthalmic technicians will escort you to our diagnostic testing area where we will conduct 4 tests, which will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes total. Don’t worry, there are no flashes of light or puffs of air!

  • The Lensometer will measure the prescription in your glasses. Even if your glasses prescription is old, that information is valuable in determining the stability of your prescription over time.
  • The Pentacam® corneal mapping system tells us the shape, structure, and thickness of your corneas, and it will do this without touching your eye!
  • The Wavelight® Topolyzer VARIO Diagnostic Device (VARIO) measures extremely detailed aspects of your corneal topography, essentially, the “peaks and valleys” on the surface. It will take 22,000 images of your cornea in a matter of seconds! The VARIO gives us the ability to treat your eyes based on your unique topography. This data will be used by Dr. Mozayeni to determine if you are a candidate for Contour Topography Guided LASIK/PRK. The VARIO also photographs the iris, which is the colored part of your eye. The photos of your iris are used for “Iris Registration,” which allows the laser to assure the eye is perfectly aligned prior to the treatment and automatically adjusting the treatment as needed, therefore improving accuracy and optimizing the final outcome.
  • AutoRefractor obtains an estimate of your vision. The technician will compare the measurement from this machine with that measured in your glasses. This gives the ophthalmic technician an idea of where to start when measuring your vision in the next room.

Screening Room

Once the diagnostic tests are completed, we will move you to a screening room. In the screening room we will:

  • Thoroughly review your medical history, including your medications, allergies, family history and record of glasses and contact lens wear.
  • Check your vision with and without your glasses.
  • Conduct tests to measure your peripheral vision, pupil reaction, eye dominance, and tear production.
  • Measure the internal pressure of your eye using a special yellow numbing drop. This test is important to determine whether you may have or are prone to glaucoma.

These are all non-invasive tests, and nothing we do here will cause any discomfort!

Double and Triple Checking Your Vision

Initially, one of our ophthalmic technicians will measure your vision with a phoropter. Although you may not recognize it by name, this is the machine you look through while we change the lenses and ask, “Which looks better - one or two?”

At this point in the LASIK consultation, we will put in drops to dilate your eyes. These drops take about 20 minutes to take effect. While your eyes are dilating you will watch our patient education video which will introduce you to Providence Eye, our surgeons and the LASIK procedure itself.

Be Evaluated by Your Surgeon

All LASIK eye surgery consultations at Providence Eye are conducted by the surgeon who will do you procedure; Dr. Mozayeni or Dr. Nunnery. Your surgeon is looking forward to getting to know you both personally and professionally. This allows him to make vision recommendations that work for all aspects of your life.

The following will take place:

  1. Check your vision since your eyes are now dilated. All patients have their vision checked three times – by a computer, manually by the technician, and by the doctor.
  2. Examine your eyes to make sure everything is healthy, this includes the: Cornea, Lens, Retina, Optic nerve
  3. Analyze the structural integrity of your cornea to determine if and how he can reshape it to correct your vision. He will do this by looking the images that were taken with the Pentacam Corneal Mapping Device and Wavelight® Topolyzer VARIO Diagnostic Device (VARIO)

He will then discuss his findings with you. This is when he hopefully tells you that you are a great LASIK candidate! However, if there are any indicators that you would not have an optimal outcome, he will be the first one to tell you that you are not a candidate.

You will likely have questions, he will be happy to answer every one of your questions.

Are You a Good Candidate?

At the end of the LASIK consultation, you can expect your surgeon to do one of the following:

  • Recommend all-laser LASIK (no blades here!)
  • Recommend all-laser, no-flap PRK (still no blades!)
  • Recommend EVO Implantable Collamer Lens (EVO ICL) sometimes called an implantable 'contact lens.' Typically due to high myopia and/or thin corneas.
  • If cataracts were detected during your consultation he will recommend you be evaluated for Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or Cataract surgery for longer more optimal results.
  • Recommend waiting for technology that would be better for you.
  • Ask you to take some measures and come back for a follow-up visit.
  • Explain to you why you are not a candidate for any laser vision correction.

About 20% of the people who come for LASIK consultations are not ideal candidates for a variety of reasons.

At the conclusion of your LASIK eye surgery consultation with Dr. Mozayeni or Dr. Nunnery, you will meet with one of our team members who will cover the following:

  • What to expect before and after LASIK or PRK surgery
  • Review pricing, payment, and financing options
  • Discuss your desired timing for your procedure and review available dates, if desired.

Be assured that at Providence Eye, you will never be pressured to schedule your surgery! This is a very important medical and personal decision. We are here to educate you and answer all your questions.

If you’re wondering how soon your surgery will be after your consultation, it all depends on the timeline that works for you. You can have surgery within a few weeks if you would like, or your consultation will be valid for one year.
